Where a development is likely to have an impact on a known bat roost, and where avoidance of that impact is not possible, mitigation works may be required.

Mitigation work could include habitat creation to improve the area for bats or could involve the replacement of roosts lost during development.

Works that affect a known bat roost could result in a offence being committed that may result in a fine and/or imprisonment if the works were not properly licensed.  Licenses, sometimes known as Mitigation Licenses or European Protected Species Licenses (EPSL), are available from the local Statutory National Conservation Organisation i.e. Natural England, Scottish Natural Heritage or the Countryside Council for Wales in order to carry out actions that would otherwise be an offence.

The publication Bat Mitigation Guidelines can be downloaded from Natural England for further information.
